Medical Mission in Samar LVF conducted a medical mission in Brgy Tag-alag , Marabut, Western Samar , an area badly affected by typhoon Haiyan. The event was orgainzed in conjunction with the LGU and Brgy Captain Manuel Lledo and Dr Michelle McGee and her staff. About 140 people received medical treatment for minor illnesses as well as medicines. CPC Advocacy Seminars In Samar CPC advocacy sessions commenced in two barangays,Tag-alag and Canyoyo, Marabut with 166 and 53 attendees respectively. The children were given a series of sessions to inform them of their rights and how to protect themselves and they committed themselves to attend future sessions beginning in January. The free medical missions and CPC advocacy sessions for this year will be sponsored by the Filippino Children's Foundation (USA) and Cross Catholic Outreach (USA). CPC on wheels for Leyte & SamarThe new Child Protection Clinic on Wheels is equipped with a consultation room, examination couch and toilet facilities as well as a foldable stage and awning. Brightly painted , blessed and ready for dispatch to Leyte and Samar. Our thanks to MIVA Austria and Jugend Ein Welt who donated the vehicle to LVF.
The LVF Partihan 2014 brought together 1500 children from the many LVF Child Protection Clinic outreach areas and oratory youth centers . Each child was given a commemorative t-shirt which also ushered in the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of LVF. The party began with Mass and later a talk by Sr Sarah Garcia and some dance numbers by the CPC Sta Mesa group.
After lunch there was an inspiration talk from a young lady who had been born without arms. She encouraged the children with the message that 'with God, nothing is impossible' as she spoke about being able to fly an airplane in spite of her disability and wrote them a note with her toes. More entertainment followed including a popular singing duo which was very much appreciated by the crowds. The LVF board of directors shared a solidarity message with the children before distributing Christmas gifts to all, a large bucket full of foodstuffs to share with their families and some toys. We concluded the party with a Christmas message from Ms Marissa Concepcion and a countdown after which 25 poppers were let off and fired streamers into the air to open the 25th anniversary celebrations of LVF. NegrosThe conference format was much the same as the previous conference in Manila (see our counter trafficking page for full write-up) In Victorias City, Negros Occ, approx 1400 people attended the counter trafficking congress and events at 2 schools - St Mary Mazzarello and Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias while in Cebu there were 1153 attendees in total- 470 at the family counter trafficking congress, 150 parents and teachers at the Lourdes parish Kindergarten and 505 trainees, teachers and parents from Mary Our Help college. CebuSr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, LVF executive Director was one of the Speaker during the recent PASWI (Philippine Association of Social Workers) Convention in SM Aura, Taguig City. She invited the approx 700 social worker participants to go back to a spiritually sensitive social work; to rediscover the richness of the roots and soul of their profession. The Laura Vicuña Foundation (LVF), a member of the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), actively took part in the 22nd National Children's Month celebrations with the theme “Bata Kasali Ka, Ikaw ay Mahalaga” which put emphasis on the importance of child participation. On September 21st 2014, 450 people gathered to participate in the second family congress organised by LVF held at La Salle Greenhills in San Juan city. The Laura Vicuna Foundation (LVF) broke ground recently to mark the start of the construction for the Laura Vicuna Center at #55 F. Manalo Street, Cubao, Quezon City last September 4, 2014.
Leading the groundbreaking was Sr. Ma. Victoria P. Sta. Ana, FMA, the Executive Director of LVF with Ms. Corazon dela Paz Bernardo with daughter Cristina, Ms. Marissa Concepcion, Ms. Marilyn Espiritu, Atty. Regis Puno and Mr. Francisco Dizon. Fr. Aris Sison, the parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish officiated the Order of Blessing. Sr. Sarah Garcia LVF’s President, said “ LVF is not only there to give the girls a home. LVF is also here to help them realize their dreams by giving them hope.” The second YEHEY camp was held August 23-24, 2014 at the Mornese Center of Spirituality, Pansol, Calamba, Laguna. There were 110 youngsters representing all the CPC areas and other youth centers of the Salesian sisters. Participants came from several cities in Metro Manila such as Taguig, Marikina, Quezon City, Manila, and Makati as well as others from Negros, Pampanga and Laguna. Five LVF youth advocates facilitated the Youth Helping Youth CAMP led by Ms. Jonalyn Bren. ..click to see full report After 9 months of attending a series of Parent Effectiveness Service (PES) Seminar, 201 parents graduated last April 10, 2014 at the Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School Quadrangle. The graduates came from the 6 CPC partner communities being served by the Foundation with the following breakdown of graduates: 15 parents – Judge Jimenez, Barangay Kamuning; 29 parents- Hillcrest, Barangay Immaculate Conception; 52 parents – Pinamana, Brgy. Napindan, Taguig; 43 parents – Brgy. 621(Bacood), Sta. Mesa; and, 71 parents from Barangay Masambong, Quezon City.
All the graduates received certificates and some had special awards. The last time they marched on stage was at their high school graduation ceremonies and so the parents were so elated with the experience that they never thought would happen again. With so many pre-occupations at home as a wife and a mother to their children, the parents were really proud to have completed the PES sessions. They are even inspired to convince other parents to join in the next batch of PES in their barangay. As graduates, they have pledged to be defenders of their children’s rights and do their best to provide the utmost development of their children. Jonalyn Bren, one of LVF’s trained child advocates presently serving as one of the Child Sector Representatives in the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), was nominated last November 2013 for the Soroptomist Violet Richardson Award, given to 10-17 years old children who have made a significant contribution to the community.
Jonalyn has been in the Laura Vicuna center since age 6 and with her exposure to LVF’s advocacy work, she has been receiving recognition because of her talent and wit in dealing with children of her age. In February 2014 she won the Soroptomist Violet Richardson Award for the Philippine region. She was formally recognised at the awarding ceremony which took place in May 2014 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City. The Philippines Regulation Commission (PRC) conferred the 2013 Outstanding Professional of the year Award in the field of social work to Sister Maria Victoria last June 20th 2013 with President Benigno S. Aquino as guest of honour and keynote speaker on the occassion of PRC's 40th founding anniversary.
